Over 50 Chinese companies, based in Kenya, set up desks at the job fair at the University of Nairobi (UoN), seeking to recruit Kenyan students.

The job fair which was held on December 20, 2017, was organized by UoN, Confucius Institute at UoN and the Chinese Embassy in Kenya. The one-day event gave the attendees an opportunity to interact with the employers, with some even getting interviewed and recruited on the spot.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi said that the fair was great opportunity for the students to meet potential employers at a single place.

“Being an open affair with the recruiters, it offers the best opportunity to put on show your cluster of related abilities, commitments, knowledge, and relevant skills that will enable you to earn a consideration or referral in the organizations present in this event,” he said. “The recruitment fair plays an important role in offering increased insights into the development of undergraduate and postgraduate curricula in order to; boost our training to match the students’ skills gains and labor market needs, better reflect the broad range of available careers, raise awareness of alternative career choices and boost the students’ career trajectories after employment.”

The Charge d’Affaires Li Xuhang, said that the job fair provided a platform for young people in need of linkages to the Chinese enterprises.

“The competition in the 21st century is fundamentally about the competition in the human capital,” he said. “ I urge the companies exhibiting here today to take full advantage of the job fair to discover and select our young talents and properly train them in your companies sp that they can grow and develop their potentials as well as those of the companies.”

The Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly, Hon. Beatrice Elachi, thanked the organizers for creating an environment in which the Kenyan youth will benefit. She called on Kenyan companies to emulate the same and set up recruitment fairs targeting the young people.

This is the second job fair in which UoN, Confucius Institute at UoN and the Chinese Embassy in Kenya have hosted the Chinese companies.
