Dr. Fred Matiang'i, CS,MOEST visits the UoN stand at CUE Exhibition on Tuesday, Feb 28, 2017

Kenya will soon adopt the Open University system to tap into the rich academic potential of its scholars living abroad in a bid to improve the quality of University education.

This was revealed by Dr. Fred Matiangi, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, chief guest, at the Commission for University Education (CUE) Exhibition.

The Exhibition which is currently ongoing started on Monday, February 27- Friday, March 3, 2017 at the Catholic University of East Africa, CUEA.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Matiangi noted that there is great potential for university education despite the challenges the sector faces. He urged for removal of the barrier between public and private Universities.  Dr. Matiangi further called on Universities to seek alternative funding because the government support for university education has been declining. Partnership with the corporate sector, developing research collaborations with other universities and development partners, tapping from alumni and philanthropists, among others are among other sources of funding that the Universities can maximize on.

University Vice-Chancellors were also urged to avoid governance issues that have bedeviled the institutions of higher learning.

On her part, Prof. Collet Suda, Principal Secretary, for University Education, urged the universities to implement the audit recommendations from CUE. She challenged the universities to offer education that is anchored on quality, relevance and is accessible to all Kenyans.

Prof. Suda challenged university dons to concentrate on doing research and offering quality education as opposed to doing shuttle diplomacy.

The exhibition is a yearly event, organized by the Commission for University Education to enable Kenyans to have access to the various programs offered by universities in the country.
