Student Caretaker Committee undergo training

Following their nomination into office, the above student caretaker committee is now set for student leadership.

The new leaders were taken through a one-day sensitization workshop on the operations of the University. The training was held at the KCB Leadership Centre, Karen, on September 29, 2017.

Student leadership was formerly represented by Student Organization of Nairobi University (SONU), but that has since been replaced following amendments to Universities Act. The Students Caretaker Committee is an interim governance framework on students’ welfare and to ensure there is no vacuum in University students’ leadership. 

Speaking during the event, Prof. Isaac Mbeche, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs, urged the incoming leaders of the Students Council to be transparent in handling public resources. Student leaders were urged to develop a budget, work on the new constitution, develop procurement plans for the things they wish to buy during the financial year 2017/2018. On the issues of alcohol and drug abuse, Prof. Mbeche appealed to the new leaders to champion the sensitization of students on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse.

The leaders were as well asked to lead by example and take good care of the physically challenged students among them. They are to be peace ambassadors who will talk to the other students to avoid riots. “We need to churn out socially and academically able graduates, preference of the industry,” he said.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Mbeche told students that they have the opportunity to be better leaders, with good grades.  He told them that they have an opportunity to learn and grow.

Dean of Students, Rev. Fr. Dominic Wamugunda, urged the new student leaders to rethink outside the box, outside hooliganism, indiscipline, impunity and all other ills that have deviled the University. “You are here to invent new student leadership, vision, passion, into student leadership”, he said. Leadership is about 5Ps, these being: Purpose, a leader needs to know what he intends to achieve. Picture, a leader needs a mental image of where he is taking his followers. People, leadership is about people and lastly, participation, people need to participate in the leadership process.

Father Wamugunda opined that, leaders need to have passion for the job. “You are coming at a critical time, students have entrenched the culture of hooliganism. Student leadership must reform. We need a new culture. We need a strategic plan,” he said.

On jobs and internships, student leaders were briefed on the various opportunities that are available through the office of Dean of Students. Placement Officer, Mr. Jamleck Njoka, told the leaders to be on the lookout, for the various vacancies that get advertised. Student leaders were also urged to play a key role in mobilizing other students to attend career talks that get organized in the various campuses and colleges. In the recent past, various companies and multinationals have come to the University looking for employees and interns.

Students were also engaged in the inner workings of the University by various departmental heads among them: Mr. Jackson Maalu, Director Students Welfare Authority, (SWA), Mr. Joseph Mokaya, Procurement Manager, Ms. Margaret John, Finance Officer, in charge of students finance among other officers.
