The University of Nairobi has received first year students for the Academic Calendar 2017/2018. The first years that reported on Monday September 5, 2016 have been taken through a week long orientation programme.

Colleges of Architecture and Engineering, Biological and physical sciences, Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences and Health Sciences are among the 6 colleges of the University that have received the first years.

The students have been exposed in detail to the facilities in their respective colleges and campuses and in general to those of the entire University.

The highlight of the orientation week is the address by University officials and the official address by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, on Friday, September 9, 2016, which all freshers attended.


In his address, the Vice Chancellor  urged the first years to learn in humility and to stay focused on education. He said that due to the different culture in the University, the freedom, and the location of the University, the students will need to be disciplined and make wise choices.

He said, “For most of us, University is the first real experience of freedom; freedom of intellect, freedom of expression and all manner of other attendant freedoms. I urge you to exercise this freedom responsibly.”

The orientation week is meant to assist the students settle down and adjust to the new life with ease.  Various aspects that will form part of the student’s lifestyle during their stay in the University have been addressed.

The University congratulates and welcomes all the students who have been selected for various degree programmes at this premier University.
