Taita Ng’etich, a University of Nairobi (UON) student, is Kenya’s nominee to the Global Student Entrepreneurship competition to be held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Mr Ng’etich’s agri-tech startup will be recognized for its low cost mobile phone text based facility that enables farmers to construct affordable greenhouses from locally available material.

The competition which attracted 50 local startups seeks to reward startups with a possible scaling up of projects for mass production of the winning products.

GSEA chairperson for Kenya Mr Jamie Pujara expressed confidence that Ng’etich’s startup was a strong nomination as it showed ability of farmers to utilise the product even in areas without electricity.

The UON student will compete for the Sh40million jackpot among other prizes on offer with his lluminum Greenhouses Kenya, an agri-tech startup that uses solar-powered sensors to control temperature within the greenhouses as well as collects data on temperature, humidity and soil moisture.

The information is sent to individual greenhouse owners via text messages allowing them to monitor and regulate their greenhouses without having to be on the farm. The farmers can then send back a short message triggering watering of plants within individual greenhouses.
