The Exhibition started on Monday, February 27- Friday, March 3, 2017 at the Catholic University of East Africa, CUEA.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Matiangi noted that there is great potential for university education despite the challenges the sector faces. He urged for removal of the barrier between public and private Universities. Dr. Matiangi further called on Universities to seek alternative funding because the government support for university education has been declining. Partnership with the corporate sector, developing research collaborations with other universities and development partners, tapping from alumni and philanthropists, among others are among other sources of funding that the Universities can maximize on.

Nairobi Innovation Week, the flagship program of the University of Nairobi received sponsorship from various government and corporate entities.
KCB Group donated Kshs. 3 Million, Safaricom Limited donated Kshs. 1 million, NIC Bank donated Ksh. 500,000, University of Nairobi Alumni donated Kshs. 500,000, Tecno Mobile donated equipment for youth competition. Other sponsors include Unicef, Embassy of Finland, Uber Kenya among others.

The Construction of Knowledge Societies- Elimika Project has recorded significant impact in empowering communities in five counties by equipping them with knowledge on pertinent issues as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
In a report presented to the stakeholders during the validation workshop held at the University of Nairobi on March 9, 2017, it emerged that the project had achieved varied results in the five target counties of Nairobi, Kwale, Turkana, Homa Bay and Makueni.

The University of Nairobi Executive Board has signed a performance contract with the University’s Council.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Council Chairperson (ag.), Mrs. Pascalia Koske, noted that the performance contract has been negotiated in a manner that resonates with the public expectations, demonstrates progressive achievement of Vision 2030 Medium Term II targets, benchmarks with international best practices and is fully aligned to the University budget.

This follows the signing of a working partnership agreement between the University of Nairobi (UoN) and the media house.

Kenyan businessman, Dr. Chris Kirubi, has challenged university dons to publish, patent their research work and prosper.
“Universities such as Harvard are successful because they pioneer research, publish more authentic and relevant research and work closely with the industry and also shape government and public policies,” he said. “Use agility and virtuality principles to deliver results. Avoid reinventing the wheel; instead borrow from the best practices.”
Dr. Kirubi was speaking at the stakeholders’ breakfast forum organized by the University of Nairobi to discuss the establishment of a modern Graduate School of Business.

The University of Nairobi’s School of Computing and Informatics and the Center for Computing and Development Laboratory (C4DLab) have officially launched the Bike Share Challenge.
Users borrow, ride and return the bicycle. Currently, the program works in a controlled campus environment where a one hour ride costs Kshs. 40 but will soon be open to the public as the project gets scaled and launched in various universities and in various counties with the country.

First year students admitted to the University of Nairobi’s academic year 2017/2018 have formally been inducted into the university system.
The freshmen who have undergone a week of orientation have been registered in the School of Education and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. In September 2016, the University received the first batch of new students for the class of 2017/2018, admitted to the other colleges.
As has always been the UoN tradition, the Vice-Chancellor formally welcomed the new students on Thursday, January 12, 2016. In his address to the freshers, Prof. Peter Mbithi congratulated them on their exemplary performance in their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) that saw them secure their place in the University.

Discussions at the two-day Chancellors Convention have provided a critical retrospection for strategic, coherent and systematic development of the university education sector.
The first Chancellors Convention which was held from January 25-26, 2017, at the Safari Park Hotel, brought together key stakeholders from both public and private universities.
Themed, ‘University Education and Sustainable Development in Kenya,’ participants took stock of achievements in university education in Kenya and also sought to consolidate and enhance these achievements.

The University of Nairobi has officially launched the Seed Enterprise Management Institute (SEMIs) at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS).
SEMIs will be a center for training farmers on seed preservation, separation, treatment, packaging and management. The project has been funded by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) at approximately USD 5 million.

The Kenyan Ambassador/ permanent representative to United Nations office in Geneva, Dr. Stephen Karau, has challenged the University of Nairobi (UoN) to be a central think-tank for Kenya on matters of the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements.
Dr. Karau called on the School of Economics to look into the possibility of hosting a centre of excellence to build Kenya’s and Africa’s capacity to reap big from the benefits of the World Trade Organization.
He said this when he paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Principal, College of Architecture and Engineering, Prof. Peter Ngau.

The University of Nairobi is seeking support from more partners for the Nairobi Innovation Week 2017.
This was revealed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi who was speaking to potential partners at the Nairobi Innovation Week 2017 breakfast meeting.
“We are inviting you to be our partners not only in executing, but also in planning the Nairobi Innovation Week 2017,” he said. “As the University of Nairobi, we can provide the environment and coordinate the thought leadership, but we need as many of you as possible to support with resources, ideas and side-events.”

At the 56th University of Nairobi’s graduation ceremony, over 8,500 graduands were conferred with Degrees and awarded Diplomas.
A record 56 PhDs, 2477 Masters degrees, 5177 Bachelors degrees, 49 Postgrad diplomas, 143 ordinary diplomas and 2 fellowship awards were presented.
The ceremony which drew graduands mainly from the Colleges of Health Sciences and that of Humanities and Social Sciences, was presided over by the Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi while the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Dr. Fred Matiang’i was the chief guest.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) has entered into collaboration to strengthen the capacities of members and staff of the parliament of Kenya and county officials.
The training will also rope in members of staff from legislative institutions in the East African region and any other persons interested in the knowledge and workings of Parliament at the Center of Parliamentary Studies and Training (CPST). CPST is one of the directorates in PSC and is the capacity building arm of the Parliament of Kenya.

Hon. Francis Ole Kaparo, the Chairman, National Commission and Integration Commission, (NCIC) has called on university students to shun ethnicity and tribalism and work towards a united country.
Hon. Kaparo was addressing students drawn from various universities at the University Students Leaders Summit held at the University of Nairobi on November 23, 2016.
“Avoid ethnic and tribal clashes. You can sort out your differences using dialogue without resorting to violence,” said Mr. Kaparo. On the student strikes, he urged students to be university ambassadors and to protect the globally respected brand.
