Prof. George A.O. Magoha, outgoing Vice-Chancellor, University of Nairobi, has formally handed over office to the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter M.F. Mbithi after a successful completion of his tenure. Prof. Mbithi becomes the seventh Vice-Chancellor since the inception of the University of Nairobi in 1970.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) will work with the Nairobi County Government in submitting an application for the 100 Resilient Cities Challenge funded by the Rockefeller Foundation.
The University through the Department of Urban Research Innovations, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Nairobi County Government in 2014 to develop the City Master Plan.
The Rockefeller Foundation is working with 100 cities around the world to help them become more resilient to social, economic and physical challenges that are growing part of the 21st Century.

The University of Nairobi management and students held consultative discussions on matters security.
The discussions come in the wake of rising insecurity incidences in the country and the university as well.
During the discussions, the University management presented a comprehensive and integrated work plan that will address students’ security and safety while on campus. Recommendations on how to address some of the pressing issues were made. Among the issues addressed include hooliganism, SONU electioneering process, student disciplinary process, rules and regulations governing accommodation in the halls of residence, student mentorship and security.

It was a historic opportunity for many to listen to a public lecture by one of Kenyans most celebrated literary icons, Prof. Ngugi wa Thiongo at the Taifa Hall, Main Campus on Thursday, June, 11, 2015 as he challenged the University community comprising of staff and students and the general public to embrace Kenyan products , companies and more so Kenyan culture and heritage.
Speaking to a house full of intellectuals and members of the public, Prof. Ngugi wa Thiongo narrated about one his early literary works, Weep Not, Child, a book that was written during the independence era and published in 1964 by East Africa Publishers among his many other literary works.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) today, June 17, 2015, hosted a forum dubbed “Get to Know Refugees- their Roles in the Country” in which various speakers gave insights on the plight of refugees in Kenya.
While delivering the key note presentation, Dr. Abbas Gullet, Secretary General, Kenya Red Cross Society noted that according to May 2015 statistics, Kenya is hosting over 586,000 refugees. In his brief, Dr. Gullet highlighted the major changes that have taken place since Kenya started hosting refugees over 30 years ago, stating that many refugees flee from their countries because of wars, famines and droughts.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) will host a forum on peace following a proposal by the Ambassador for the Republic of South Sudan in Kenya, Mariano Deng Ngor.
Speaking during the meeting with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi, Amb. Ngor said that after several considerations, the University of Nairobi was chosen because of its rich history in hosting historical discourses in Kenya. According to the Ambassador, the forum will capture the essence of the academia in peace talks and the proceedings may act as guide for stakeholders involved in peace talks.

The University of Nairobi has launched the Staff Movement Advice and Staff Clearance Information Systems.
The Staff Movement Management System will enable the University to maintain accurate and easily retrievable staff movement advice records, keep track of staff movement advice process, provide staff history and improve the efficiency of movement advice. On the other hand, through the Staff Clearance System the University will maintain accurate and easily retrievable staff clearance records and keep track of staff clearance process, lost items and University debtors. The two systems were developed by ICTC team in collaboration with the Administration and Finance Departments.

A team from Texas University and National Instruments, an American tech company, have entered into discussions with the University of Nairobi on collaboration on how to improve water quality and availability in Kenya.
Through the partnership, the three will monitor the replenishment of water aquifers and resources, leverage on entrepreneurs to do innovation and provide software to solve challenges such as water quality and availability

The National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK) will set up a National Oil Geochemical and Petrophysical Laboratory and a core storage facility at the University of Nairobi Chiromo Campus. According to the NOCK CEO, Summaya Hassan-Athmani, the laboratory will provide the University access to modern equipment for Geochemical and petrophysical analyses relevant to the oil and gas industry.
In a further contribution that will boost the University’s learning facilities, the National Oil will also donate equipment worth USD 1 million to be routinely used for geochemical analysis. UoN students will utilize the equipment to develop new skills in some of the typical geochemical analyses required to support oil and gas exploration activities in the country. Athmani also expressed willingness to give internships to final year students to enable them gain industrial experience.
