Christopher Coons the US Senator from Delaware is a man whose heart is in Kenya. He still remembers bits and bits of Kiswahili and the different parts of the country he visited. He heartily describes Kenyansâ€™ hospitality during his stay in the country. Senator Coons held a town hall at the University of Nairobi.

H.E Ambassador Amina Mohammed, Assistant Secretary- General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), engaged students, lecturers and the public in discourse on sustainable development, dubbed Rio +20: process and way forward.
The lecture, which was organized by the University of Nairobi’s Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy (CASELAP) touched on the Rio +20 Conference’s themes on a green economy in the context of sustainable development poverty eradication and the institutional framework for sustainable development.

The University of Nairobi has done it again at the 2012 Nairobi International Trade Fair by winning first position in three categories and second position in two categories. UoN received top prizes from President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. President Mwai Kibaki for emerging the best research and education stand, the best institution of higher learning in developing advanced technology and the best stand in development research. President Kibaki also congratulated the 420 exhibitors for the different roles they play in driving the nation towards the realization of Vision 2030.

First year students admitted to the University of Nairobi (UoN) for the Academic Year 2011/2012 were officially inducted into the University Community. The 5,000 students admitted to the Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Architecture and Engineering, Biological and Physical Sciences, Education and External Studies, Health Sciences and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Prof. Goran Hyden, a distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science and former Director, Center for African Studies, University of Florida at Gainesville, USA, made the keynote presentation during the Wajibu Wetu Public Lecture. In an initiative dubbed Wajibu Wetu, public and private universities have been brought together to contribute towards the creation of a sustainable culture of peace.

The setting up of an Alumni Centre by the University Of Nairobi Alumni Association (UONAA) received its first major boost when KPMG Kenya made a Kshs. 1 Million contribution towards the project. The cheque which was presented to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. George Magoha by KPMG Kenyaâ€™s Corporate Social Investment manager, Mr. Philip Muema is the first corporate contribution towards the Alumni Centre project.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) became the first institution of higher learning to take up a leadership role in the implementation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 when it launched the Rapid Results Initiative (RRI). Under the initiative the University will embark on a 100 days sensitization programme on the implementation of the Constitution.

The University of Nairobi was yet again the host of a town forum that saw esteemed scholar and Professor Emeritus Ali A. Mazrui give a moving lecture.The lecture captured the journey that has led to the realization of the judiciary system that we have in place today. He noted that Kenyaâ€™s journey to independence has seen revolutionary reforms, specifically focusing on the three arms of Government namely the Legislature, Executive and Judiciary. According to Prof. Mazrui, the gradual â€˜Africanizationâ€™ of the system was faced with challenges that are still being addressed.

The University of Nairobi Alumni Association (UONAA) received a major boost today when the Chancellor, Dr. Joseph Wanjui made a donation of Kshs. 1 Million towards the setting up of an Alumni Centre.This is the first individual contribution towards the Alumni Centre project.Speaking during the cheque presentation ceremony Dr. Wanjui challenged other alumni to come forward and support the project in terms of endowing their resources. He noted that philanthropy was not common and that the private sector needs to do more in terms of supporting trusts. Dr. Wanjui noted that it is important for the University to develop linkages that will promote the growth of the Alumni Association.

The University of Nairobi held its 50th Graduation Ceremony on Friday December 6th 2013 which coincided with the on-going 50th celebrations of the nation.
The highlight of the ceremony was the installation of the new Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi who replaced Dr. Joseph Wanjui whose term came to an end.
Over 9,000 graduands were conferred with Degrees and awarded Diplomas and the third Doctor of Science (DSc.) in the Universityâ€™s history was awarded to Prof. David M. Ndetei. The ceremony drew graduands mainly from the Colleges of: Health Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Mitsubishi Corporation awarded 15 University of Nairobi students scholarships through its annual Mitsubishi Corporation International Scholarships Programme.
The selected students, drawn from the from the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies as well as the School of Biological Sciences (BSc degree in Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources Management), come from needy backgrounds and have recorded excellent performance in their respective courses.

The relocation ceremony of the White Peace Pillar from Kongiâ€™s Square to the Great Court, outside Education Building, Main Campus. The Peace Pillar was planted in 1985 by delegates during the 3rd United Nations Decade Conference for Women held in Nairobi as a symbolic reminder of the need to be peaceful. The Peace Pillar was being relocated to pave way for the commencement of construction of the proposed university towers.

During the ceremony, the Korean Studies Office was officially opened by His Excellency, the Ambassador of Korea to Kenya, Mr. Chan-Woo Kim, assisted by Prof. Lucy Irungu, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research Production and Extension. Winners of the 2012 Essay Competition were also announced and awarded.

A partnership between the University of Nairobi (UoN) and Hanbat National University will see the two institutions collaborate on areas of mutual interest.
The Memorandum of Understanding which was signed on January 15th, 2013, at UoN will mainly focus on economics, engineering and business disciplines. The collaboration will include research, staff and student exchanges as well as development of academic programmes.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and the University of Manitoba have renewed the Memorandum of Understanding for another five years.
The signing ceremony marked the continuation of a productive partnership that begun 32 years ago.The collaboration between the two institutions has over the years flourished evidenced in the establishment and growth of the University of Nairobi Institute for Tropical and Infectious Diseases (UNITID) which is located at the College of Health Sciences (CHS), Faculty of Medicine.

In a ceremony officiated by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. George Magoha, the University of Nairobi (UoN) gave a befitting farewell to senior retiring managers: Mrs. Salome Ndinda Munavu and Mrs. Elizabeth Gesare Ongwae, who served as the University Librarian and as the Administration Registrar, respectively. Mrs. Munavu has served the University for 37 years while Mrs. Ongwae for 27 years.

In a colourful ceremony held on July 2, 2013, at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS), the Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) launched the STAKE Project. The STAKE project (Stabilizing Kenya through Resolving Forest Related Conflicts) was officially launched by the Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Prof. Judy Wakhungu. To mark the auspicious occasions, nine ceremonial tree species were planted by the project stakeholders at WMI site to celebrate the walks and works of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai who was the chair of the STAKE Project steering committee.
