The newly elected University of Nairobi Student Association (UNSA) leaders underwent a two-
day leadership training in Mombasa. The leaders who will serve between 2023/2024 were
trained from the 12 th to the 13 th of June 2023 at the Travellers Beach Hotel.
The students had already undergone induction training, showing them the various aspect of the
University structure, operations and processes. However, for the student leaders to be effective
and efficient in handling their mandate, it was important to develop their leadership skills to
grow their self-confidence and equip them with moral character, personal discipline, leadership
and efficiency.
Therefore, this necessitated a leadership development workshop at the Travellers Beach Hotel
on June 12 and 13, 2023. The University Executive Board members attended the workshop led
by the Vice Chancellor, Deans of Faculties and Associate Deans of Kisumu and Mombasa
campuses and Heads of various central units that interact with students’ leadership.
In his keynote address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Stephen Kiama, highlighted key aspects that
anchored the rest of the training. “This workshop should focus on the issues of; Teamwork and
team spirit, having an innovative ecosystem, digitalization, people focus-student-centred
learning, sustainability, research and community service, networking and values of functional
leadership,” he highlighted.
The training was divided into various sessions that were delivered by University staff, students
and experts drawn from external stakeholders. The training was organized in a blended model
with speakers making their presentations virtually and in person presentations.
The key highlights of the workshop included qualities of leadership, mentorship, forms of
power, integrity and values, developing leadership focused on proposal writing, resource
mobilization and financial management.
