A Fellowship is a competitive award supported by a grant made directly to an individual of postgraduate university level, in support of advanced study in a specific academic discipline. It requires supervision, service, research, or teaching during or after the Fellowship period. It is customarily a non-degree program whose main outcome is to improve the Fellow’s knowledge, skills, competences and exposure to current information and technologies in a specific discipline.
The Long term Fellowship is a 2 year, post masters fulltime training program offered on a competitive basis to Kenyan nationals. It is divided into three tracks or specializations as follows:
- Program Management Track where applicants should have at least a Master’s degree in Health or related social and biological sciences,
- Health Economics Track, applicants should have at least a Masters degree in Economics
- Health Informatics Track, applicants should have Masters degree in Informatics, Information Systems, Computer Science or biostatistics.
- Monitoring and Evaluation Track, applicants should have a Master's degree in Social or Biological Sciences with Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
- Epidemeology and Biostatistics Track, applicants should have a Master's degree in Social or Biological Sciences with Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field
The main objective of the Fellowship Program is to build Fellows’ capacity in program leadership and management through hands on training interspersed with classroom instruction. Fellows are placed in host institutions where they spend 75% of their time, with the remaining 25% reserved for class based training at UoN meant to enhance their competencies in identified technical fields.

There is only one intake per year, and each intake consists of an average of 15 fellows (5 per track). Fellows are admitted into the Fellowship Program at the beginning of August each year.
As already noted, the Fellowship Program is a 2 year fulltime program. So, enrolment into this program calls for a 2 year commitment during which time enrolled individuals (Fellows) are placed in selected host institutions involved in HIV/AIDS activities. Because of its fulltime nature, enrolled individuals should either resign their jobs or obtain a study leave for 2 years.
A mentor is someone who takes a special interest in helping the Fellow to develop into a successful professional by providing guidance, knowledge and support in such a manner that the Fellow can willingly receive and benefit. Each Fellow is assigned an academic and host institution sponsor for purposes of academic and professional growth. The academic mentor is a member of staff or any academician associated with University of Nairobi while the host mentor is a member of staff at the host institution. These mentors are the main persons with whom the Fellow has day to day contact and are charged with the overall responsibility of assisting the Fellows to attain maximum benefit from their Fellowship experience. The academic mentor guides the Fellow in academic experiences both at the University of Nairobi and at the host institution through regular interaction and supervisory visits. The host institution mentor guides and supervises the Fellow during field attachment.
No. Absolutely, not! The Fellow is a trainee with an opportunity to learn on the job. As such, during the 2 year period, you can neither take formal employment elsewhere or seek employment with your host institution. Thus, while Fellows will be totally committed to the pursuit of their host institution objectives and will participate fully in all program activities as assigned, this does not constitute employment with the host institution.
Since the mode of training emphasizes learning by doing, host institutions benefit from the Fellows’ knowledge and experience in identified technical fields. In addition, the UoN-CDC Fellowship Program provides logistical support to the host institution in form of furniture, computers, and email connectivity in situations where these are warranted. Host institution staff are also eligible to attend all short courses offered under the Fellowship Program.
This is highly discouraged, however, if a fellow so chooses, will be required to return any program property and stipend accrued during their fellowship tenure at the time of leaving as per the letter of offer. Ideally, we prefer individuals with clearly defined priorities who will not quit halfway the program.
Yes, Fellows can be terminated from the Fellowship Program if they don’t live to the Fellowship Program and/or host institution expectations. The grounds for termination are well spelt out in the contract that the Fellow signs with the Fellowship Program at the beginning of their 2 year Fellowship.
Enrolment into the Fellowship Program is entirely free. You don’t need to pay anything in order to enroll or continue with your Fellowship Program.
All Fellows who successfully meet the requirements of the Fellowship Program are awarded a Certificate of Participation at the end of their 2 year Fellowship.
Our experience suggests that many of the alumni HIV/AIDS Fellows – as the graduates from this program are referred to – have been readily absorbed in high level positions in different organizations in Kenya as well as in the region. Many graduates work as program officers, program directors/coordinators or program managers of key governmental and nongovernmental programs while the rest are employed at the level of Technical Advisors. Thus, while we can never be sure when the Fellow will get employed after completing the Fellowship, there is always an opportunity for an alumni Fellow at some point in time.
Fellows are expected to engage in the initiation or development of innovative programs while at the host institution or conduct operations research or pilot programs that can inform the organization’s ability to achieve set targets and perform more effectively and efficiently. This constitutes what is known as a programmatic activity. At the end of the 2 years, Fellows undertake an implementation project that is supposed to meet a gap in the activities of the host institution. The project is funded to the tune of 10,000USD.

Fellows work with PLPs to design and implement projects that strengthen organizational capacity in HIV/AIDS programs in line with the identified capacity needs. Staff from the PLPs also participate in a six months training program and also in relevant online training courses.
