Technical Meeting to Share Mapping Report on WEE and WiL Policies - 9th June 2026

Joint Review Meeting on NPWEE Baseline Mapping

The University of Nairobi Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) Hub recently hosted a joint meeting with representatives from UN Women and the State Department for Gender Affairs and Affirmative Action. The purpose of the meeting was to review findings from the Hub's NPWEE baseline mapping study – a comprehensive exercise aimed at establishing who is doing what, where, and at what scale in Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) and Women in Leadership (WiL) across Kenya. The study covered 16 strategically selected counties and combined desk research with fieldwork, including one-on-one consultations with County Sector Working Groups to capture grassroots initiatives that lack an online presence. The three teams discussed the findings with the goal of enriching the final study report.

Key findings from the mapping reveal that WEE programs and initiatives significantly outnumber those focused on WiL across all 16 counties. The meeting also noted that the concept of Women in Leadership is commonly but erroneously associated solely with political leadership, yet it encompasses a much wider range of leadership forms – including community leadership, school board governance, leadership in religious settings, and chamas (women's groups). The results of this mapping exercise will help government and development partners reduce duplication of efforts, identify gaps, and strengthen the investment case for WEE and WiL work in Kenya.
