The University Nairobi hosted the 2nd International Inorganic Chemistry Conference in Kenya from 1st – 2nd October 2020, which was organised by KEN 01 project under the Department of Chemistry.

The theme of the conference was ‘Inorganic Chemistry Technological Innovations and its contributions in Socio-economic Development’. The conference was opened by the Depute Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs Prof. Julius Ogeng’o who pointed out that the project activities on capacity building, community outreach and scientific conferences and information sharing are in line with the University’s vision, mission and strategic plan.

The conference speakers addressed the role of Inorganic Chemistry to industry, human health, food security and environmental pollution and remediation. It also addressed issues on integration of e- learning in the teaching of Chemistry.

The conference was funded by the International Science Programme of Uppsala University Sweden, and coordinated by the Department of Chemistry under the college of Biological and Physical Sciences. The conference had participants coming from five countries namely Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Sweden.

This conference was unique since it was hosted virtually due to COVID 19 pandemic. The participants concluded that chemicals are critical for human development, however their sustainable utilisation requires understanding and management of associated risks.
