The University of Nairobi through a three-day workshop in Naivasha established an Internationalization Policy. The workshop that took place between 4-6, September 2024 brought together International Faculty reps from each Faculty, the Academic Affairs division, International office, Corporate Affairs office all under the Engineering and Science Workshop led by the Directorate of Advancement and Institution Development.

Representatives from University of Nairobi, Maseno University,  Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Leibniz Universität Hannover , Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences - AUAS , Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera , University of Tennessee, Knoxville, University of Ghana, Legon , Universiti Putra Malaysia attended the workshop.

Each of the representatives shared their best practices, their student experiences, welcome packages, budget allocations, International office personnel and their approach to meet their internationalization objectives.

During the official opening Ceremony, Mr. Brian Ouma, the Director, Advancement and Institutional Development and Ag COO noted the benefits of Internationalization; it will increase global competitiveness, enhance student and staff mobility and he also mentioned the two major obstacles at UoN have been the issue of Credit transfers with various institutions and management of financial resources/ grants.

Mr. John Orindi, Director Corporate Affairs welcomed all the participants and urged them to brace themselves for intense days of learning from each other and successful deliberations on the workshop objectives.

The team developed an Internationalization policy that will see more International students join the University by clearly mapping out the step by step procedures that International students need to go through to be admitted either for a full degree or short course. The different partnership models and how staff and students can optimize and implement them, cultural immersion programmes that would enhance an International student’s experience.

Through the Internationalization policy developed, the University will ensure that International student numbers have increased, they will have unique student experience, more UoN students and staff will participate and apply for mobility opportunities, more Global partnerships, enhance Research and Innovation and increase the University’s revenue.
