The University of Nairobi (UoN) has secured a USD 690,000 research grant for the Supporting Holistic & Actionable Research in Education (SHARE) - Co-Creating for Change: Learning Becomes Service to Justice.  

Faculty of Education dons, Prof. Hellen Inyega is the Principal Investigator (PI) SHARE and Prof. Justus Inyega is the Coordinator, SHARE.

SHARE was sub-awarded to Resilient Africa Network (RAN) of Makerere University by University of Notre Dame (UND) – Pulte Institute for Global Development under Notre Dame’s Cooperative Agreement No. AID-7200AA20CA00025 and funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID). UoN is UND and RAN’s Local Implementing Partner.

According to Prof. Hellen Inyega and Prof. Justus Inyega, SHARE is an innovative Inter-University, Inter-Faculty and Inter-Disciplinary activity being implemented from January 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023 as three separate but related studies.

The studies are being undertaken concurrently and include an ecosystem diagnostic process (Phases 1 & 2); field research design and implementation (Phase 3) and capacity building.

The first study focuses on Language of Instruction Transition in Education Systems (LITES). Prof. Hellen Inyega doubles up as the PI working closely with Prof. Patrick Iribe Mwangi, Chairman, Department of Kiswahili, Prof. Jane Oduor from the Department of Linguistics, Prof. Angelina Kioko, a Professor of English and Linguistics at USIU, Mr. Titus Charo Kazungu, Associate Director Literacy Program for Africa at Room to Read, Dr. George Andima, Senior Lecturer in Language, Kisii University, Evans Mahaya, Executive Director, Association of Reading of Kenya and Dr. Bonface Ngaruiya, Chairman, Department of Education Communication Technology and Pedagogical Studies. 

The other two studies are under the umbrella: Higher Education Institutions Generating Holistic and Transformative Solutions (HEIGHTS). The first is the HEIGHTS - Innovation Ecosystem with Prof. John Nzioka Muthama of the Faculty of Science and Technology as the PI working closely with Dr. Judith Mbau of the Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology in the Faculty of Agriculture.

The third is the HEIGHTS - Financial Sustainability where Dr. Peterson Magutu is the PI working closely with Dr. Winnie Nyamute; Dr. Cyrus Iraya; Dr. Duncan Elly Ochieng and Zipporah Onsomu all of the Department of Management Science & Project Planning in the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences.
