UoN undergoes performance Contract 2023-2024 Evaluation
The University of Nairobi, under the stewardship of Vice Chancellor Prof. Jesang' Hutchinson, on Wednesday, 22nd January 2024 hosted representatives from the State Department of Public Service Performance Management and Monitoring Unit for the 2023/2024 performance contract evaluation. The event provided a platform for dialogue on institutional performance, historical challenges, and future strategies.
Performance contracting involves the negotiation, implementation, and evaluation of performance targets between government entities and public institutions. This annual exercise is critical in ensuring efficient service delivery and the attainment of strategic goals within the public sector. Prof. Hutchinson welcomed the government officials, George Muge and Roselyn Naliaka, and emphasized the unique challenges faced by larger institutions like UoN. She stated, “In terms of funding, we are a big family and should not be measured by smaller universities. Historical challenges and the current funding model do not adequately address our needs.”
Dr. Caren Omwenga, representing the University Council Chair, stressed the significance of performance contracting in promoting institutional efficiency. Dr. Omwenga appealed to the government representatives to address historical injustices beyond the university’s control. Dr. Parmain Ole-Narikae credited performance contracting with UoN’s strong reputation, noting that it has made the institution a top-ranked university and attracted investors. He called for a revision of the evaluation tools to align with current realities and emphasized the need for funding reform.
George Ngigi, leading the performance contracting initiative, highlighted the importance of objectivity and fairness in the process. He assured that concerns raised, including historical injustices, would be relayed to the appropriate authorities for action. Mr. Ngigi also emphasized performance contracting as a tool to measure service standards, commending UoN’s commitment to excellence.
The evaluation session was also attended by Directors of Central Department Units.
