The presidential working party which was appointed by president William Ruto through gazette notice
number 11920 held a town hall meeting today 11th November 2022 at the University of Nairobi Taifa
Hall, the forum was attended by residents of Nairobi County, students leaders, and union
representatives who had drafted views on curriculum forms, basic education, technical and vocational
training, university education, financing education and also governance and curriculum development.
Among the groups that made submissions were The Muslim Education Council, Kenya Parents
Association, University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA), Kenya booksellers and stationery
association, and representatives for Kenya primary and secondary students and teachers.
various stakeholders spoke about certain thematic areas related to education reform. Among the areas
brought to light was the need to have an inclusive education system for all, quality education, better
implementation of an inclusive education system, quality assurance and standard funding and teacher
training and management.
Prof. Margaret Hutchinson AVC RIE, UON presented a memorandum to review and recommend a
governance and financing framework for TVET training and development university education research
and training. “Government should develop a clear standing for universities as a research-based
institution to allow better funding.”
The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama, a member of the 48-chosen task force committee was present
and gave an interview to the media regarding the role of the presidential working party on education
reform.
