On Wednesday, October 11-13, 2023, a section of University of Nairobi staff from different departments went on a three-day workshop to validate a lifeskills curriculum.

The curriculum which has been developed through the support of UNESCO under the umbrella of the O3 plus program, will address the gap of soft skills, build a student’s resilience, increase awareness of a student’s rights in various aspects of their lives that is non-academic, address issues of mental health and empower them to be peer counsellors or have basic counselling skills.

The curriculum that is set to be launched later this year is a welcomed move since the University scrapped the Common Units.

The curriculum modules are: Careers and Mentorship, Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Counselling, and Online Dating and Safety. The course is set to be self-paced online module that only requires a student to go through short assessments after each module.

Speaking during the validation exercise, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o pledged his support and the Management’s support on the establishment of this curriculum citing that, ‘Students are the most important constituent and as a community, no matter the ratio, we must take care of that one out of many.’

He applauded the members of staff that worked on the curriculum for their collaborative efforts and urged all stakeholders to be involved in the exercise.

Jane Kamau, UNESCO’s Program Officer, Mr. Johnson Kinyua, UoN Dean of Students and Mr. John Orindi, Director Corporate Affairs were in attendance.
