The University of Nairobi (UoN) has once again demonstrated its commitment to accountability, efficiency, and academic excellence by achieving an "Excellent" overall grading in the evaluation of its Financial Year (FY) 2024/2025 Performance Contract. The rigorous evaluation exercise, conducted by the State Department for Public Service Performance Management and Monitoring Unit, concluded on November 7, 2025, marking a successful implementation cycle for the institution.

Mr. Robert Ngei, Director, State Department for Public Service Performance Management and Monitoring Unit, said this is commendable performance across Key Result Areas and, it should be felt on the ground, the evaluation assessed the University’s performance against targets set in its key strategic areas, which are closely aligned with the national development agenda, including Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Key highlights of the exemplary performance include:

  • Financial Stewardship: The University achieved a near-perfect absorption rate of allocated Government of Kenya (GoK) funds, alongside a significant increase in internally generated revenue. This demonstrates prudent financial management and resource utilization.
  • Research, Innovation, and Commercialization: UoN reported a substantial increase in research grants awarded and a record number of patents filed and commercialized innovations. This success cements its position as a leading hub for research and innovation in the region.
  • Service Delivery: The digitalization of core services, including student registration and examination processing, led to a marked improvement in service turnaround times, enhancing the overall experience for students and staff.
  • Student Experience: Notable improvements were recorded in graduate employability rates, student support services, and the completion rate of postgraduate studies, reflecting the institution's commitment to producing globally competitive graduates.

Speaking after the official release of the results, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jesang Hutchinson, expressed profound satisfaction with the outcome, attributing the success to the concerted efforts of the entire University community. "This 'Excellent' rating is a clear testament to the dedication, hard work, and shared vision of our staff, students, and council," said the Vice-Chancellor. "Performance contracting is not just an administrative requirement; it is a strategic management tool that has successfully embedded a culture of accountability and results-oriented service delivery across all our faculties and units. Our focus remains on delivering on our mandate as a premier institution of higher learning and a key partner in national development."

The Chairman of the University Council, Prof. Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha, congratulated the Management on the stellar performance and reiterated the Council's commitment to providing strategic oversight.

"The Council is proud of these results. They indicate a robust governance structure and a management team that is executing the UoN 2023-2027 Strategic Plan effectively," stated Prof. Nyaigotti. "We will continue to support initiatives that drive efficiency and ensure the University maintains its competitive edge both regionally and internationally."

The successful evaluation of the FY 2024/2025 Performance Contract provides a strong foundation for the University's future strategic objectives. The administration has committed to utilizing the insights gained from the evaluation to address minor operational challenges and further streamline its processes in the current financial year.
