Global Healthcare Partnerships: UoN and Austrian University Strengthen Ties Through Erasmus+ Program
The University of Nairobi (UoN), through the Faculty of Health Sciences’ Department of Nursing Sciences, continues to solidify its international standing by participating in the Erasmus+ Mobility Exchange Programme (2024–2027). This strategic collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences (UAS) for Health Professions Upper Austria offers students and staff a unique platform for academic growth and clinical immersion in a global healthcare setting.
Initiated in 2023 under the leadership of Prof. George Osanjo, the then Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, the program was developed in close coordination with the Department of Nursing Sciences. The initiative also includes participation from the School of Nursing at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), fostering a broader regional impact.
The primary objectives of this partnership under the Erasmus+ Key Action 1 (KA131 & KA171) includes Fostering cooperation between EU Member States and Kenyan institutions, Enhancing nursing education through international best practices and Providing clinical exposure in diverse healthcare environments.
The program has already seen significant success since its official rollout for the 2024–2027 cycle which are: Student Mobility (2025): The first two students traveled to Upper Austria from June to August 2025. They were placed in various Austrian hospitals for intensive clinical experiences facilitated by UAS.
In October 2025, a Kenyan delegation visited Upper Austria to share knowledge and expertise. This was followed by a reciprocal visit from Austrian faculty members to the University of Nairobi in November 2025 and the momentum continues as the next cohort of students has already been selected and is scheduled to depart for Austria later this year.
The University remains committed to equity in its selection process. Students are chosen through a transparent and documented framework, with a specific emphasis on providing opportunities to those from disadvantaged backgrounds or with fewer resources. This ensures that the benefits of international exposure are accessible to all deserving candidates.
