Martha Koome is the new Chief Justice
Justice Martha Koome has been appointed Chief Justice by President Uhuru Kenyatta following the National Assembly's approval. Justice Koome is the first woman in Kenya's history to hold the position.
As per to the gazette notice dated May 19, 2021, Justice Koome will head the Judiciary for a non-renewable 10-year term, succeeding David Maraga who retired in January this year.
An alumnus of the University of Nairobi’s School of Law, Class of 1986, Justice Koome is renowned for her passion for children and women’s rights. To this end, she was named United Nations (UN) Kenya Person of the Year 2020 in recognition of her advocacy for the rights of children in conflict.
She becomes Kenya’s third Chief Justice after the passing of the Constitution in 2010.
