The University of Nairobi, through the Office of the Dean of Students, successfully conducted the University of Nairobi Students’ Association (UNSA) 2026/2027 Leadership Induction Workshop on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the CBK Institute of Monetary Studies along Thika Road.

The one-day induction, held under the theme “Transformational, Ethical and Responsible Student Leadership,” brought together newly elected student leaders, University Management, and key administrative stakeholders for a comprehensive orientation aimed at equipping the leaders with the knowledge, skills, and values required for effective leadership.

The programme was officially opened with welcoming remarks by the Dean of Students, Mr. Johnson Kinyua, who underscored the importance of leadership grounded in integrity, service, and accountability. He encouraged the student leaders to embrace their roles as representatives and stewards of the student body.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Prof. John Mande, in his opening remarks, emphasized the need for student leaders to balance their academic responsibilities with leadership duties while upholding discipline and responsible conduct.

Delivering the keynote address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ayub N. Gitau, challenged the student leaders to transition from activism to structured leadership, urging them to adopt a solution-oriented approach in addressing student concerns. He highlighted the critical role of student leadership in institutional governance and called for constructive engagement, accountability, and collaboration with University Management.

The workshop featured a series of targeted sessions designed to provide practical insights into key areas of university operations. These included University governance and legal frameworks, discipline and student conduct, balancing academics with leadership responsibilities, and navigating the University’s digital infrastructure.

Further sessions addressed financial management and resource mobilization, strategic communication and media engagement, as well as student welfare, health, and wellbeing, ensuring that leaders are well-equipped to address the diverse needs of the student community.

An interactive plenary session provided an opportunity for student leaders to engage directly with management, seek clarifications, and deepen their understanding of institutional processes.

In the afternoon session, faculty and campus representatives presented key challenges affecting students, alongside proposed solutions. This was followed by a feedback session led by the Dean of Students, fostering dialogue and reinforcing a collaborative approach to problem-solving.

The induction concluded with remarks from the UNSA President, who outlined the strategic leadership direction and reaffirmed commitment to serving the student body effectively, followed by a vote of thanks and closing prayers.

The workshop marks a significant step in strengthening student leadership at the University of Nairobi by promoting a culture of responsibility, engagement, and transformative leadership.

As the new UNSA leadership begins its term, the University remains committed to supporting them in fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and conducive academic environment for all students.
