University of Nairobi will mentor the Nyandarua County Government to establish Nyandarua University College in the county. The request was made during a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor by a delegation from Nyandarua County Government led by the Governor, H.E. Dr. Moses Kiarie on Friday, June 2, 2023. In his remarks, the governor reiterated that the idea of establishing a university in Nyandarua has been held by the local community for a long time. That this has been driven by the appreciation that access to quality education is necessary for the sustained social, political and economic development of the community and society in general.

“In several forums on the development of the country, the need for access to affordable education has always been emphasized,” said Dr. Kiarie. “Establishment of a university is supported by various stakeholders, all of whom are committed to its realization. These include parents, guardians, students, leaders, professionals from the county, and the county government,” he added.

As the major stakeholder, the county government will identify and provide land and other support for the establishment of the university college and its campuses. This is echoed in the Nyandarua County Integrated Development Plans which seeks to establish a university in the county.

In his remarks, The VC, Prof Stephen Kiama commended the county government for choosing the University of Nairobi as a key pillar to achieve this great milestone. “As the best university in Kenya and the region, the university has welcomed the request and will be willing to guide the county,” he said. The VC advised the delegation to write and send a formal request following the required guidelines to his office for the commencement of the process.

A working committee was already established as the idea has been in the works. The committee comprises professionals from both the University of Nairobi and Nyandarua University College team, which includes professionals from Nyandarua County and the County Government. The UoN team will be tasked to guide and advise the Nyandarua University College team on Commission of University Education (CUE) guidelines and requirements in establishing a university college and matters of curriculum development.
