UoN holds free dental camp to mark World Oral Health Day
The University of Nairobi held a free dental camp to commemorate World Oral Health Day (WOHD) that is observed annually on March 20.
The free dental medical camp organized by the Department of Dental Sciences in conjunction with the Department of Pharmacy and other partners offered free screening for oral diseases, oral health sensitization and emergency treatment to UoN community and the wider public.
The event saw over 150 patients checked for different oral diseases by dental experts from the University.
The Chief Operations Officer (COO) Mr. Brian Ouma officiated the event that was held at the University Health Services Hospital.
In his remarks, Mr. Ouma expressed gratitude to the Department of Dental Sciences and partners for organizing the free medical camp, offering essential care to members of University community and the wider public.
“Your dedication truly reflects our university's core value of care, ensuring that both our students and the broader community maintain good health. Indeed, health is the ultimate wealth, enabling individuals to engage fully in productive endeavors,” the COO said.
In reference to the theme of this year’s WOHD commemoration, Mr. Ouma noted that oral health remains a neglected part of person-centred health care and wellbeing.
“Today, as we come together to commemorate World Oral Health Day, we are reminded of the significance of good dental care. This year's theme, "A happy mouth is a happy body," underscores the crucial link between oral health and overall well-being,” Mr. Ouma said.
He called on the government and all stakeholders to support the Faculty, particularly the Department of Dental Sciences, in acquiring advanced equipment to enhance training capacities at the University saying the demand for specialized dental care is only set to increase in the coming years, and it is imperative that we equip ourselves to meet these challenges head-on.
“To our valued partners, your presence here is deeply appreciated. We welcome collaborations in research and endeavors that serve the greater good, such as this initiative. Together, we can make significant strides in promoting oral health and overall well-being,” the COO said.
Other than marking the World Oral Health Day, the Departments of Dental Sciences and Pharmacy are also marking 50 years of existence since they were established at the University of Nairobi in 1974.
According to Dr. Bernard Mua, acting chair of Dental Department, about 90% of dental practitioners in Kenya have been trained at UoN and to mark this milestone, they have organized free countrywide community dental outreach activities as part of 50 years celebrations.
“We are asking members of the public to come out in large numbers and take advantage of the free dental services during these camps and join us in the celebrations,” Dr. Mua said.
Present during the event were Mr. John Orindi, Director Corporate Affairs, Mr. Sam Ochieng, who represented MD UNES.
