UoN participates in 55th World Literacy Day
Over 100 adult learners mostly from the Maasai Community were awarded certificates in proficiency and literacy skills with the oldest being 62 years old in Ewuasi Kidong, Kajiado County. The Course is offered by the University of Nairobi, Faculty of Education.
The graduation Ceremony was on September 28, 2021 and it marked celebrations of the 55th International Literacy Day. World Literacy Day is marked globally in the month of September.
The theme for this year’s celebrations, “Literacy for a Human- Centered Recovery: Narrowing the Digital Divide” In Kiswahili, “Kujinusuru Dhidi ya Majanga Kupitia Masomo ya Kidijitali Kwa Wote”.
Chief Guest, H.E the Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, Kajiado County, appreciated the presence and the impact of the University of Nairobi. He promised to work closely with UoN on education matters to enhance literacy skills in the county which is lagging behind because for a long time they had rejected education. Governor Lenku pledged his support for adult education tutors and promised to employ 10 of them through County government resources.
On his part, the County CESM of Education, Mr. Ole Ncharo promised to look into modalities of working with the University in sponsoring students from the county to take adult education, community development, Business studies, Psychology, Gender Studies and other related Courses. He invited the UoN to sumbit a proposal urgently in this regard.
The Adult education students who graduated were keen to continue with the studies at the University. Most of them prefer distance learning citing the technological challenges and lack of devices, Internet and electricity.
Many other residents expressed their interest in studying at UoN including PhD level.
