The Univeristy of Nairobi team celebrate the winnings at the Huawei ICT Competition
2019-2020 Kenya Award Ceremony at the Radisson Blu Hotel on December 16, 2019.


Maluki Muthusi, a 3rd year student from the School of Computing, has bagged the Huawei Network Cloud Track Award 2019. Maluki was named winner alongside Kabarak University’s Ngetich Kimaiyo.
 
The awards were presented at the Huawei ICT Competition 2019-2020 Kenya Award Ceremony presided over by Principal Secretary for ICT, Jerome Ochieng at the Radisson Blu Hotel on December 16, 2019.
 
The Excellent Institution award and the Best Instructor Award both went to Multi Media University. Kenyatta University won the Excellent student Award Network Track while Zetech University won the Excellent Award Cloud Track. All the students were offered internship opportunities at Huawei.
 
The goal of the competition which is in its second year in Kenya and 5th globally is to equip Kenyan youth with skills to bridge the digital skills gap in Kenya. The programme gives the youth an opportunity to garner skills in emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Block Chain. This will enable them to harness online job opportunities and enhance Kenya's capacity to participate in the global e- commerce through creative solutions.
 
Huawei has signed agreement with UNESCO to promote digital and e-learning education in Africa through the smart education technology.
 
The Huawei smart education technology will be rolled out to achieve efficiency in education for sustainable development.
 
The University of Nairobi has already signed a smart class room technology cooperation framework with UNESCO and Huawei. It will focus teachers, content, and infrastructure and teaching facilities. The smart classroom is highly interactive and easy to be deployed.
 
Zhao Xiyuan, Minister Chancellor of the Chinese Embassy, Darius Mogaka Ogutu, Director for University Education, Daniel Yang, Deputy CEO of Huawei Kenya are among the guests present at the ceremony. The University was represented by John A. Orindi, Director Corporate Affairs, Johnson Kinyua, Director, Career Services, Joram Kinuthia, Deputy Director, Network Infrastructure Services, ICT Center, among others.
