UoN Flags off 9 Students to China
TheUniversity of Nairobi is proud to flag off nine students who were awarded Chinese scholarships through the Confucius Institute to study Chinese Language for six months in Tianjin Normal University. The students from different academic backgrounds were awarded scholarships to advance Chinese language education in Kenya. This initiative, which began in 2023, aims to integrate Chinese language instruction into Kenya’s national education system, enhancing educational collaboration between the two countries.
Prof. Ayub Gitau,the Ag.Deputy Vice Chancellor ,Academic Affairs presided over the event..He thanked Prof. Wang Shangxue, the Director of Confucius Institute and the students for their joint efforts in winning the Scholarships.”You students are going to be the ambassadors of University of Nairobi, please explore and experience the rich culture of China and share the culture of University of Nairobi with them, learn about their “New Model of International Chinese Language Education in the Context of Digital and Intelligent Transformation.” His address, “The Application and Practice of Digital Intelligence in Chinese Language Teaching at the University of Nairobi and the Confucius Institute,” demonstrated how digital technologies are transforming language in teaching.

Last year September 2024, twelve students were awarded scholarships to study in China, the purpose is to Build a Win-Win Ecosystem for Confucius.
Prof. Wang Shangxue, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi(CIUN), is pleased to announce that they are planning to award twenty-five scholarships this year to Kenyan students at the University of Nairobi. The program is called 2+2, two years in university and two years in China.
One of the beneficiary Student Joy M. Waswa said that it has really been a good journey since she joined the Chinese language program and that she was able to attain a mean grade of A with 300 points to earn her full scholarship. Catherine N. Njuguna's case is different, she is just from a high school and tarmacked a bit and she is delighted to have applied for the scholarship and got it.
The Director Corporate Affair and International Affairs Mr. John Orindi said that students need to align their goals with emerging global opportunities in the evolving global order which favours China. He asked the students to project a good image of the University and share their experiences through stories in order to inspire others Prof. Abby representant the Dean faculty of Science and Technology, congratulated the students for their award and wished them good experience while in China
The University of Nairobi’s Confucius Institute plays a vital role in facilitating internationalization through scholarships. The CIUN’s roles include conducting research and organizing reciprocal visits by education Students and staff to ensure alignment with Kenya's educational needs.
Chinese Language marks a major step in deepening the educational and cultural ties between Kenya and China.
