UoN Dental School kicks off Golden Jubilee Celebrations
The School of Dental Sciences held a free dental check-up and treatment to the members of public as part of commencement of celebrations of the school’s golden jubilee. The Dental School admitted its first cohort of students in 1974 and will be marking 50 years in 2024.
Over 1,000 members of the public turned up for the check-up on Saturday 14th October, 2023 as the school officially launched the countrywide community service to mark 50 years of existence and service to community.
The launch of the one year Golden Jubilee celebration was presided over by Dr. Patrick Amoth, Acting Director General for Health at the Ministry of Health and the University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama.Dr. Amoth congratulated the staff and management at the School on reaching this major milestone and for their exemplary work of training and nurturing dentists in Kenya and across the region.
On his part, Prof. Kiama said the School was a centre of excellence in training dentists. “I am so proud of this School because it has produced remarkable men and women who have served and continue to serve patients in this country diligently. “When you go to almost all hospitals across this country you won’t miss to get a dental doctor from this school,” Prof. Kiama said.
His sentiments were echoed by Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o, who said UoN is the home of teaching, learning, and research.
The Chairman of the Dental Department Dr. Walter Odhiambo said the countrywide community service will be conducted in 22 counties across the country and later on host the Nairobi International Oral Health Conference scheduled for August, 2024.
Also present during the event were Chief Operations Officer Mr. Brian Ouma, Dean Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. George Osanjo, Prof. Stanley Khainga, Chairperson, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council, and Dr. Tim Theuti, President, Kenya Dental Association.
