Recognizing the Past, Celebrating the Present, and Paving the Way for a Better Future"

The University of Nairobi, department of International Studies and Diplomacy, the department of History and Archaeology and the Department of Literature all under the African Centre for the Study of the United States of America (ACSUS), is hosting the Commemoration of the Black History Month, Themed ‘A Celebration of Commerce & Culture.’ The hybrid event will be held on Tuesday, February 28th 2023, at the Capital Club East Africa, Nairobi from 5-8pm EAT and is hosted by ACSUS, the University of Nairobi, and Venture Lift Africa and the Centre for Global Africa (Delaware State University)

Black History month is celebrated within the month of February in order to remember, honour and commemorate the historical and contemporary accomplishments of African Americans. Black History Month provides a platform  to collectively recognize their achievements, while reflecting on the challenges that they have been able to overcome and still remain. Notable persons’ that are often celebrated during this month include, Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X and Rosa Parks who were vital and instrumental in championing for Racial Equality and Inclusivity. The event which aims to commemorate Black History Month, will usher in a new era of collaborative engagement with Black Americans and the Diaspora with ACSUS, by hosting a networking reception to recognize the Black American community in Kenya and Kenyans who have returned from the US. Additionally, the event will create a significant platform for establishing a foundation for economic diplomacy between Africa and the US through the examination of the history of the US through the experience of the African Diaspora. “By appreciating these efforts, we can better understand our own history and the influence the broad-based Diaspora has had on African societies.” Dr. Patrick Maluki, Chair, Department

The University of Nairobi together together with the State of Denver, United States, recently launched The first Center for the Study of the United States of America ( ACSUS) in Kenya, on the 21st of October 2022.
