The Faculty of Health Sciences emerged the best overall, during UoN Annual Sports Day 2023.

The team, commonly referred to as Team Afya  produced sterling performance in different games categories to be crowned overall winners after bagging a total of 12 medals in the students' category and 2 medals in the staff category.

FHS topped in the students' combined medal standing bagging 6 gold medals and 6 silver medals, followed by the Faculty of Science and Technology with 14, medals; 4 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences came 3rd with 11 medals; 4 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o early on the day, officially opened the Sports Day and planted a tree to commemorate the 2023 edition of the annual event. “We had to hold this event despite the rain because it is an important milestone for your journey as students.

After the flagship of the sports day, all the faculties present from the different University campuses were assembled in their various groups to start the sports competition that ran through the day. The turnout for the event by the students was commendable with participants and the rest of the students showing up to cheer for the competitors. Some of the games played during the sports day were football, Basketball, Rugby, Volleyball, Handball, Swimming, Athletics, Badminton, Scrabble, Chess, Darts, Creative games, Tug-of-War and E-sports.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama, appreciated the University community for braving the weather, uniting and participating in all the activities planned for the day. He noted, ‘University of Nairobi is a home of talents and we want students to excel in not only their academics but also in sports.” He expressed his joy when saw staff members playing.

A representative from the Ministry of Sports, speaking on behalf of the Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Ababu Namwamba, delivered the keynote speech, highlighting the contribution made by kenyans in the Sports world. He lauded the University for nurturing talent and he made a special mention to Ferdinand Omanyala, “UoN sports has produced impressive people like Omanyala, we need to continue partnering with the University in hosting some important events in the future.”

 Mr. Thomas Oyieng, from KCB, congratulated the University for planning a whole day of sports. He highlighted the benefits of sports and sporting events. He noted that, ‘As KCB, they acknowledge the importance of such days within corporate organizations. He mentioned KCB products and services that are available for the UoN Community to benefit from.’

 The Dean of Students, Mr. Johnson Kinyua, The Directorate of Corporate Affairs, Mr. John Orindi, also spoke during the event.
