Wyss Academy of Nature and University of Nairobi enter into collaboration to foster Environmental Research
In an attempt to spearhead environmental empowerment, the Wyss Academy of Nature-birthed by the University of Bern, Wyss Foundation and the County of Bern, and the University of Nairobi formalized their commitment to advancing environmental research through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This collaboration aims to reinforce bilateral ties between the Swiss and Kenyan governments, focusing on the exchange of scientific expertise and promoting joint initiatives. The partnership will facilitate exchange programs for students to encourage academic interaction between the University of Nairobi and the University of Bern. Students from both institutions will have the opportunity to broaden their perspectives, enhancing their educational experience and cultural understanding.
The Director of the Wyss Academy of Nature, Ben Okita, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "This partnership signifies a commitment to global environmental stewardship. By joining forces, we can leverage our collective expertise to address pressing environmental challenges and contribute to the global knowledge pool."
The collaboration goes beyond student exchange programs and will include the exchange of scientific documents and events. This sharing of information aims to enhance research capabilities and foster a more comprehensive understanding of environmental issues affecting both Switzerland and Kenya. Joint capacity-building initiatives will further contribute to the development of skilled professionals in the field of environmental science.
Professor Stephen Kiama, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, emphasized the importance of such partnerships in addressing global challenges. "This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to environmental sustainability and the importance of international cooperation in advancing scientific knowledge. We look forward to the positive impact this collaboration will have on our students, faculty, and the broader community," he stated.
The signing of the MoU marks the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between the Wyss Academy of Nature and the University of Nairobi. As the two institutions embark on joint research endeavors, it is anticipated that their collaborative efforts will contribute significantly to the global conversation on environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Dr Ben Okita signed on behalf of WYSS academy with Prof Kiama Gitahi for the University of Nairobi. The signing ceremony was witnessed by :Prof Thuita Thenya, John Orindi anf Collins Omondi from UoN, Prof Margaret Owuor, Etec from the university of Bern.
