Kenyan Women Unite to Advance Peaceful and Violence-Free Elections Ahead of 2027 Polls
Women leaders, peacebuilders, retired women judges, women’s rights advocates and representatives of faith-based organisations and peace networks have united under the Kenyan Women for Peace initiative to advance peaceful, inclusive and violence-free elections ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
The commitment was made during the inaugural meeting of Kenyan Women for Peace, held on Friday, 9 October 2026 in Nairobi. The meeting brought together women from diverse professional and community backgrounds to strengthen collective efforts towards safeguarding peace, upholding constitutionalism and protecting the democratic rights of all Kenyans.
The initiative seeks to establish a coordinated, national and non-partisan platform that mobilises women’s leadership, expertise and networks to prevent electoral violence, strengthen early warning and response mechanisms, facilitate dialogue and mediation, and promote the meaningful participation of women and grassroots communities in peacebuilding.
Drawing on lessons from previous electoral processes and Kenya’s 2022 Women’s Situation Room experience, participants underscored the importance of sustained preparedness, coordinated action and community-level engagement in identifying and addressing emerging tensions before they escalate into violence.
A key commitment emerging from the meeting is support for the establishment and operationalisation of a Women’s Situation Room for Kenya’s 2027 General Election. The proposed platform will serve as a coordinated mechanism for early warning, preventive diplomacy, women’s participation, protection and timely responses to electoral tensions and violence.
Participants further committed to working collaboratively with relevant national institutions, women’s networks, youth, peacebuilding organisations and other stakeholders to strengthen community vigilance, facilitate dialogue, support mediation and promote survivor-centred responses to electoral and gender-based violence.
The initiative will be guided by the principles of political neutrality, independence, integrity and confidentiality, while respecting Kenya’s constitutional institutions. Kenyan Women for Peace affirmed that its work will remain independent of political parties and candidates and will complement, rather than replace, the mandates of statutory institutions.
The meeting also emphasised the importance of ensuring that women in all their diversity—including young women, women with disabilities, women from marginalised communities and women seeking political leadership—can exercise their democratic rights freely and without fear of violence or intimidation.
In a communiqué adopted at the meeting, Kenyan Women for Peace reaffirmed that peace extends beyond the absence of violence to encompass justice, dignity, inclusion, equality and respect for the rule of law. The communiqué outlines the collective commitment to sustained action before, during and after the 2027 General Election.
The inaugural meeting marks an important step towards strengthening women-led collaboration in Kenya’s peacebuilding and democratic governance processes. Through coordinated networks, strategic partnerships and grassroots engagement, Kenyan Women for Peace seeks to contribute to an electoral environment in which every Kenyan can participate meaningfully, safely and with dignity.
Under the rallying call, “Women for Peace. Peace for Kenya,” the initiative underscores the vital role of women’s leadership and collective action in safeguarding democracy and building a peaceful and inclusive electoral process.
